REVIEW: Eucerin Sun Spray Transparent SPF 50

I am trying really hard to show you everything I wanted this month... Yet the photos for this review were taken last summer.

Eucerin is not of my go to brands. Until last year I didn't even pay any attention to them. It seems they're sister brand of Nivea with more of a pharmaceutical look.
I have mentioned picking a sunscreen takes me forever. Previously I had Moderate Protection Spray SPF 20 by Avène but I didn't repurchase it first because although I love Avène as a brand half of their products have a mystery ingredient that breaks me out and second because the Avène cream left a visible cast on my nearly white skin and it annoyed me. The Eucerin spray however said "Transparent", "Non-greasy" and "Quick absorption" so after going through the ingredients I decided "THIS IS IT!".
The bottle is quite pretty, I like the orange. However due to the oily texture of the product, all of the labels rubbed off super quickly. 200 ml of product is enough for me to use for more than half a year on a daily basis. During winter of course, I only put sunscreen on my face and neck. I paid like 9€ for it which I find very reasonable. The irony of France is that mid end skincare is super affordable 'cause you would pay 11-13€ for Nivea sunscreen.
Off to the ingredients, yes first one is Alcohol Denat. and I have mentioned many times I dislike it a lot because it's harsh and drying but I picked this willingly. Next one is C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, an emollient and it's supposed to make the spray feel good on the skin. Homosalate is an organic chemical UV filter, very efficient against UVB. It seems to be a controversial ingredient because during in vitro (as in a test tube) it can mimic certain hormones, while in vivo (as in real people or animals) no toxic effect was found. This isn't particularly exciting but Homosalate is extremely hard to avoid. Octocrylene is another chemical UV filter, it raises some concerns because some studies show it is photosensitive and it increases the risk of free radicals (indirectly linked to DNA damage). Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (also known as Avobenzone) is a photostable chemical filter a lot safer than the previous two (finally!). Ethylhexyl salicylate is a chemical UVB filter, in low concentrations (below 5%), it's considered safe. Butylene glycol dicaprylate/dicaprate is an emollient but also a penetration agent and in a sunscreen formula I'd normally choose to avoid it. Dibutyl adipate is another emollient, proven to be non-toxic. Glycerin is an organic moisturizer. Tocopherol is a Vitamin E, however it is photounstable so it really has no place in a sunscreen. Glycyrrhiza Inflata Root Extract is a licorice extract, used as a moisturizer. Acrylates/octylacrylamide copolymer is what makes the spray water resistant.
Although it seems like I am heavily bashing this particular sunscreen if you look at the ingredients of the other similar products you will find the exact same filters. I would like to note that Homosalate and Octocrylene are both rated as moderate toxicity concern, where ingredients such as Oxybenzone and Octinoxate are rated high and Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide are rated low. Overall I would call this ingredients list a so-so because it raises some concerns about its efficiency.

On my skin, the product feels greasy, it absolutely in no way absorbs quickly. In fact when I come back home in the afternoon or evening I can still feel it being slightly tacky. However the alcohol makes it irritating, it causes itchiness if you apply it after hair removal, also overall I must apply lotions and butters on my legs daily to keep them smooth after using this. Another problem is when it's actually really hot (35°C +) this spray makes you feel like you're frying in a hot pan. I would wear this on rainy or cloudy day and generally when it's not hot but I avoid putting it on when there's a lot of sun. A sunscreen I can't wear when it's sunny? How about no. It has a subtle sunscreen scent.

What I like:

  • Inexpensive (around 9€)
  • Decent amount of product (200 ml)
  • Doesn't leave a white cast
  • Water-resistant
What I don't like:
  • Ingredients are so-so (a lot of controversial UV filters)
  • Drying formula
  • Not suitable for irritated skin
  • Feels greasy

All in all: 2/5

I have another sunscreen by Biotherm with the exact same UV filters that I will show you soon. I would give it a bit higher note because it's not greasy and irritating but I will continue looking for a physical filter sunscreen.

As for would I recommend this product? Nope.
