REVIEW: The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + HA 2%

You've probably figured out by now I'm a fan of The Ordinary. Leaving aside their disastrous PR fiasco since the beginning of the year, the brand has never disappointed me in terms of product quality and customer service.

Today's review will be about the Lactic Acid 5% + HA 2% which is a gentle chemical exfoliant. My previous experience with AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) was with Mandelic and Glycolic and I wasn't impressed at all. What pushed me to order The Ordinary's Lactic Acid 5% was Tracy from Fanserviced-b's post of 17 different lactic acid reviews. If you're new to chemical exfoliation, I highly recommend you to read her post. Tracy's review of the product wasn't brilliant but it really intrigued me because we have completely different skin types and the reason she didn't like it sounded like the reason I'll love it. Lactic Acid is an AHA, it's a mild chemical exfoliator and it's great for sensitive skin. Glycerin is a moisturizer and a solvent. Pentylene Glycol is a moisturizer. Triethanolamine is a pH adjuster (proper pH is very important for AHAs). Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer is a moisturizer. Tasmannia lanceolata Leaf Extract (Tasmanian pepperberry) has soothing and antioxidant properties. Arginine (an amino acid) is an antistatic and a moisturizer. Potassium Citrate is a pH adjuster. Acacia Senegal Gum and Xanthan Gum are viscosity control agents. Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate is a chelating agent. PPG-26-Buteth-26 is an antistatic and an emulsifier. Ethyl 2,2-Dimethylhydrocinnamal is a fragrance. Ethylhexylglycerin is a moisturizer. 1,2-Hexanediol is a solvent. I love the packaging of the product, it's simple but it's practical and glass can later be recycled. The product has relatively simple ingredients list with the AHA, a couple of hydrators and a soothing ingredient. I tested the pH myself and it's somewhere between 3 and 4 which corresponds to Deciem's claims of 3.60-3.80. This is a relatively high pH for an AHA, which makes it less potent and gentler on the skin. If your skin is used to actives, this might not make a great difference for you.

Харесвам опаковката на продукта, простичка, но практична и стъклото после може да се рециклира. Продуктът има сравнително прост списък със съставки от AHA, няколко хидратанта и успокояваща съставка. Тествах pH-то лично и е някъде около 3 и 4, което отговаря на твърдението на Deciem от 3.60 до 3.80. Това е сравнително високо pH за AHA, което я прави по-малко потентна и по-нежна към кожата. Ако кожата ви е свикнала към активни съставки, този продукт може и да няма големи резултати при вас.

As I said my previous experience with AHAs wasn't amazing. I tried various ways to use Glycolic and Mandelic acids with no luck. Every time I was left with instantly irritated and red skin that took more than a day to fully calm down. I wasn't sure if it was the pH or the concentration (both influence the potency) of the AHA that was the issue, that's why I decided to go with something gentler like this lactic acid. The texture of the product is pleasant. The Ordinary is not known for their elegant textures but this one easy to deal with. It's slightly viscous, absorbs quickly and it doesn't leave a sticky residue. Until recently I thought that it's the AHAs that smell bad but I found out it was actually an added fragrance in this case (interesting because previous products I tried also smelled unpleasantly). I have no idea why anyone would think adding this fragrance in particular is a good idea. To me the product smells like a mix of vinegar and dirty socks but it goes away quickly so it's bearable.

Не съм сигурна дали проблемът беше pH-то или концентрацията (и двете влияят на потентността) на AHA-та, затова реших да пробвам с нещо по-нежно като млечната киселина. Текстурата на продукта е приятна. The Ordinary не са известни с елегантните си текстури, но тази е лесна за употреба. Леко е вискозна, абсорбира се бързо и не оставя лепкав филм. Доскоро мислех, че просто AHA миришат лошо, но открих, че всъщност има добавен аромат в случая (интересно, защото и другите, които ползвах също имаха неприятна миризма). Нямам идея, защо някой ще иска да добави точно този аромат. На мен продукта ми мирише на смесица от оцет и мръсни чорапи, но изчезва бързо и е поносим.

I've been using this product for roughly a year and I'm extremely pleased with it. I'm about to finish my first bottle of it and I already have two backups waiting in line. This AHA is incredibly gentle on my skin, it normally doesn't cause any tingling or redness when I use it. Instantly my skin feels so much smoother and brighter. The results are even more prominent on the next day, where the brightening is even more visible. I found out my dry skin is not very happy with stronger and more potent actives, so something as gentle as this is perfect for me and I can use it once per week without issues. If you're in need of a quick pick me up for dullness or rough texture, I would highly recommend you to start with something fool-proof as this AHA.

Използвам този продукт от около година и съм много доволна от него. На път съм да изразходвам първото си шишенце и вече имам 2 други в запас. Тази AHA е много нежна към кожата ми и по принцип не ми докарва щипане и зачервявания когато я използвам. Кожата ми веднага се усеща по-мека и по-сияйна. Резултатите са още по-забележителни на следващия ден когато избистрянето се вижда още повече. Открих, че сухата ми кожа не харесва силни и потентни активни съставки, така че нещо нежно като тази е идеално за мен и я ползвам веднъж в седмицата без проблеми. Ако имате нужда от бързи резултати срещу повехналост и груба текстура, горещо препоръчвам да започнете с нещо лесно за употреба като тази AHA.

I'm extremely pleased with this product, it has become a necessary part of my routine. I'm glad I can finally experience all the benefits of an AHA without any of the side effects.
