REVIEW: OST Original Pure Vitamin C20 Serum

Yet another review of a very popular product, it's the OST Original Pure Vitamin C20 Serum. OST is a Korean brand, known mostly for their two vitamin C serums C20 and C21.5. Both are pretty similar from what I've heard.

This is a 20% Ascorbic Acid (L-AA) Vitamin C serum diluted in water. This was one of the most popular vitamin C serums back in 2014 and I remember everyone using it at some point.

Why use a vitamin C serum?  It can help fade scarring and hyperpigmentation, as well as improve your skin tone and contribute for a brighter complexion. Previously, I used Vivant Skincare Spin Trap Antioxidant Serum which wasn't a bad vitamin C serum but it was way out of my budget. The OST serum can be found on eBay, Jolse, etc for around $14 and it contains 30 ml of product. It comes in a cute orange red glass packaging with a dropper. The packaging is made of dark glass to prevent photo-oxidation. The product has a faint citrus scent, nothing too offensive.

It is very important to store this product in the fridge if you want it to last longer than 2 months. It's important to limit air exposure too when possible. If you've never used an L-AA serum before, it is best to use 2-3 times per week so you can allow your skin to adapt. L-AA is a mild exfoliant and it can cause irritation if your skin is sensitive. The first month of use I experience some stinging for the 5 minutes after application. During winter, I had to pause my AHA (Vivant Skincare 8% Mandelic Acid) because using both actives was too much for my dry skin at that time.

Много е важно продуктът да се съхранява в хладилника, ако искате да издържи повече от 2 месеца. Важно е и да се ограничи контакта с въздуха доколкото е възможно. Ако не сте използвали L-AA серум преди, най-добре да го ползвате по 2-3 пъти в седмицата, за да може кожата ви да се адаптира. L-AA е нежен ексфолиант и може да предизвика дразнения, ако кожата ви е чувствителна. Първият месец аз усещах парене първите 5 минути след нанасяне. През зимата трябва да спра терапията с AHA (Vivant Skincare 8% Mandelic Acid, защото двете активни съставки едновременно бяха твърде силни за сухата ми кожа по това време.

Water is the main solvent used for this serum. Ascorbic Acid (or L-Ascorbic Acid/L-AA) is the pure form of the vitamin C serum, a brightening ingredient with antioxidant properties, unfortunately it is not very stable when diluted in water. Ethanol is a solvent, it can be a bit drying but it helps for the better absorption of the product by the skin. Sodium Lactate is a moisturizer, it is often used as a preservative because it has anti-microbial properties. Butylene Glycol is a solvent and a moisturizer. Glucose is a moisturizer. Camellia sinensis Leaf Extract (green tea) is a moisturizer, an antioxidant, an emollient and an astringent. Rosa davurica Bud Extract (Amur rose) is an antioxidant. Carthamus tinctorius Extract (safflower)  is an emollient. PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is a surfactant. Sodium Hyaluronate (a salt of Hyaluronic Acid) is a moisturizer. BIS-PEG-18 Methyl Esther Dimethyl Silane is a moisturizer. Diethoxyethyl Succinate is a solvent. Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer is a surfactant and a viscosity control agent.  Xanthan is a viscosity control agent. PEG-180 is a solvent and a moisturizer. Gluconolactone (a PHA) is a very gentle chemical exfoliating ingredient suitable for sensitive skin. Beta-Glucan is a moisturizer, with possible anti-aging properties that has anti-inflammatory functions. Citrus Aurantium dulcis Oil (sweet orange) is a fragrance. Zinc PCA is zinc salt of Pyrrolidone Carboxylic Acid, it's a moisturizer with anti-microbial properties. Panthenol is a moisturizer and an antistatic. Niacinamide (a derivative of vitamin B3) is one of my favorite ingredients, it's a moisturizer and a brightening ingredient. Glycerin is a solvent and a moisturizer. Tocopheryl Acetate (a derivative of vitamin E) is a moisturizer and an antioxidant. Lecithin is a moisturizer, an antioxidant, an emollient and an emulsifier. Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is a moisturizer and a fragrance. Ubiquinone is an antioxidant. Diisopropyl Adipate is a solvent and an emollient. This has pretty good ingredients for the price! It has a very high concentration of L-AA, as well as other hydrators and antioxidants for even more benefits. Alcohol can be a bit drying for sensitive and dry skin, I definitely felt the need to hydrate extra after using this. Once my skin got used to it I pretty much used it every day in my AM routine. Vitamin C actually boost your sun protection, so it's a great active for your morning routine. I noticed visible brightening after using this serum for 2 months. My skin looked glowier and healthier. Keep in mind, this oxidizes through the day and starts to lean orange when it does so it's best to swipe it off with a cotton pad infused in toner after 20-30 minutes of wait time. I used this straight after cleansing, after pH adjusting toner when I was using one and before hydrating toner. If you store this carefully, you can get up to 5 months of use, at least my serum lasted that long before it fully oxidized. Once the serum turns bright yellow, it is time to replace it because it doesn't have enough potent vitamin C left and it mostly just irritates your skin without doing anything beneficial.

Продуктът има доста добри съставки за цената си! Има много висока концентрация на L-AA, както и на други хидратанти и антиоксиданти за още повече ефект. Алкохолът може да бъде малко изсушаващ за чувствителна и суха кожа, аз определено имам нужда от екстра хидратация след употребата му. Веднъж щом кожата ми свикна, го използвах всяка сутрин. Витамин C всъщност подсилва слънцезащитата и е чудесна активна съставка за сутрешната рутина. Забелязах видимо избистряне след 2 месеца употреба. Кожата ми изглеждаше по-сияйна и здрава. Имате предвид, че се оксидира през деня и е най-добре да го избършете с тампон напоен с тоник след 20-30 минути чакане. Аз го използвах веднага след почистване, или след регулиращ pH-то тоник когато използвах такъв и преди хидратиращ тоник. Ако го съхранявате внимателно, можете да го ползвате до 5 месеца, или поне моят издържа толкова преди да се оксидира. Веднъж щом серумът стане яркожълт, трябва да се замени, защото вече няма достатъчно потентен витамин С и предимно дразни кожата ви без да прави нищо полезно.

A major downside I can find is that this serum has a very unstable formula, L-AA just doesn't go well with travelling and using it on the go when it's in a water-based serum. But since this is fairly inexpensive and it does an extremely good job at brightening, evening skin tone and fading scarring and pigmentation, I am willing to forgive it. I would repurchase it but I would like to experiment with other more stable forms of vitamin C to see if they have the same potency and if they give as impressive results. Огромен недостатък, който намирам е, че има много нестабилна формула. L-AA просто не става за чести пътувания във водна база. Но тъй като е сравнително евтин и се справя наистина добре с избистрянето, изравняването на тена, изсветляването на белези и пигментация, съм склонна да му простя. Бих си го купила отново, но искам да експериментирам с други по-стабилни форми на витамин C, за да видя дали имат същата потентност и дали дават толкова добри резултати.
