REVIEW: Benton Papaya-D Sun Cream SPF 38 PA+++ (2017)

This product was sent to me by Benton for review more than a year ago. I received it when the sunscreen first came out on the market.

The packaging is quite cute and the product comes in a white squeeze tube with a silver cap. This product retails for $20 and it contains 50 ml of sunscreen. Honestly, I'm not sure I would spend that much on a tube of sunscreen when I have plenty that I like for under $10.

Опаковката е сладурска и продуктът идва в бяла тубичка със сребърна капачка. Продуктът се продава за $20 и съдържа 50 мл слънцезащита. Честно казано, не съм сигурна, че бих похарчила толкова за тубичка слънцезащита при положение, че имам много за под $10, които харесвам.

This is the daily sunscreen and it's SPF38 PA+++. I don't really see the point in low SPF sunscreen, honestly, I wish this was SPF50 but since it's over SPF30 I felt comfortable wearing it even during the summer.

Това е ежедневна слънцезащита и е със SPF 38 PA+++. Не виждам смисъл в слънцезащита с по-нисък фактор, честно казано, искаше ми се да е SPF50, но тъй като е над SPF30 се чувствах удобно да го нося и през лятото.

Benton's main selling point is this sunscreen has papaya extract (papain) which is interesting because this papaya enzyme is considered to be lightly exfoliating and I'm not sure what exactly it does in a sunscreen.

Големият плюс на тази слънцезащита според Benton е, че съдържа екстракт от папая (папаин), което интересно, защото този ензим по принцип се счита за леко ексфолиращ и не съм сигурна какво точно прави в слънцезащитата.

The first ingredient is Carica papaya Fruit Water which is a solvent and a moisturizer. Titanium Dioxide is an UVA and UVB physical filter. Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (aka octinoxate) is a chemical UVA and UVB filter. Isoamyl p-Methoxycinnamate (aka amiloxate) is a chemical UVB filter. Glycerin is a solvent and a moisturizer. Dicaprylyl Carbonate is an emollient. Cetearyl Alcohol is an emulsifier, a surfactant and a viscosity control agent. Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine (aka Tinosorb S) is a chemical UVA and UVB filter. Pentylene Glycol is a moisturizer. 1,2-Hexanediol is a solvent. Simmondsia chinensis Seed Oil (jojoba) is a moisturizer and an emollient. Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is a moisturizer and an occlusive. Aluminum Hydroxide is a viscosity control agent. Panthenol is an anti-static and a moisturizer. Carica papaya Seed Oil (papaya) is an emollient and a moisturizer. Glyceryl Caprylate is an emollient and an emulsifier. Stearic Acid is a surfactant, viscosity control agent and an emulsifier. Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate / VP Copolymer is a surfactant and a viscosity control agent. Xanthan Gum is a viscosity control agent. Carica papaya Fruit Extract (papaya) is a moisturizer. Tocopherol (a derivative of vitamin E) is an antioxidant. Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate is a moisturizer, it has anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory properties. Helianthus annuus Seed Oil (sunflower) is an emollient, an antioxidant and a fragrance. Xylitylglucoside, Anhydroxylitol and Xylitol are moisturizers. Papain is the advertised papaya enzyme, it has mildly exfoliating properties. Propanediol is a solvent and a viscosity control agent. Adenosine (a nucleoside) is a soothing ingredient with anti-aging properties. Sodium Gluconate is a chelating agent. Disodium Adenosine Triphosphate is a moisturizer. Algin is a fragrance, an emollient, an antioxidant and a viscosity control agent. Carthamus tinctorius (safflower) is an emollient. Glucose is a moisturizer. The Benton sunscreen is a thick white cream and it's a little bit difficult to spread it evenly. You can notice this on the photo below but it clumps a little bit and it takes a lot of blending to make your skin soak it up. This concerns me a little bit because I'm not very sure if I'm getting an even coat of protection on my face or not. This brings up the other issue, this layers terribly. It leaves so much white cast and it feels so greasy. I found this really hard to wear even as someone with dry skin. I honestly don't see why it's marketed as a daily sunscreen when I certainly didn't have the time to play with this fussy formula on a daily basis.

Оставя толкова много бял филм и се усеща много мазен. Като човек със суха кожа ми беше много трудно да го нося. Не виждам защо е рекламиран като ежедневен слънцезащитен крем, тъй като аз определено нямам време да си играя с тази пипкава формула всеки ден.

I'm pretty sure the issues with the formula are mainly due to the Titanium Dioxide. Usually most sunscreens with Titanium Dioxide that don't leave a horrendous white cast contain nano particles. However, all the other physical only filters sunscreens I've tried tend to have a pretty dry formula. They're hard to blend out and apply evenly but set very quickly and despite the white cast are easy to apply base makeup on top of. This one just doesn't set, it stays greasy for a very long time when applied in the correct amount and is an overall mess to deal with.

Сигурна съм, че проблемите с формулата са най-вече заради титаниевият диоксид. Обикновено повечето слънцезащити с титаниев диоксид, които не оставят бял филм съдържат нано частици. Обаче, всички останали слънцезащити с физични филтри по принцип имат по-суха формула. Трудно се разнасят и нанасят равномерно, но се фиксират много бързо въпреки белият филм и е лесно да се нанесе грим отгоре. Този, просто не се фиксира, остава си мазен много дълго време и когато е нанесен в правилното количество става мазало.

I really wanted to like this sunscreen but other than the pleasant fragrance there is nothing that made me want to reach for it. I used it up you will soon see it in my empties but I definitely didn't enjoy it.

Много исках да харесам тази слънцезащита, обаче освен приятният аромат, нищо друго не ме караше да посягам към него. Използвах го и скоро ще го видите в празни опаковки, но определено не ми беше приятен.

There are numerous other sunscreen that are two times less expensive than Benton's and the formula is a lot more cosmetically elegant. The ingredients list looks great but we can't judge formula from that alone. The thing is, it underperforms in my opinion and it's in need of a serious reformulation before it can even remotely compare with the dozen other sunscreens I currently enjoy using.

Има безброй други слънцезащити, които са два пъти по-евтини от тази на Benton и формулата им е много по-козметично-елегантна. Съставките изглеждат чудесно, но не може да съдим формулата само по тях. Според мен е разочароващ продукт и има нужда от сериозна корекция преди да може дори и малко да се сравнява с дузината други слънцезащити, които обичам да ползвам.

Sunscreen can be tricky for a lot of people, but unless this specific formula is the only one you've found that doesn't trigger sensitivities, I'm pretty sure you will find better options than this. If your skin tone is deeper than very fair to fair, this will leave you with a lot of white cast. If your skin type is combo or oily, this can definitely feel greasy. Overall, I really don't recommend this and I don't think it's worth the $20.

Слънцезащитата може да е сложна тема за много хора, но освен ако тази специфична формула е единствената, която не ви предизвиква алергии, сигурна съм че ще намерите много по-добри опции. Ако кожата ви е по-тъмна от много светла до светва, този продукт ще ви остави с много бял филм. Ако кожата ви е комбинирана или мазна, определено може да се чувства още по-мазна. Като цял, не прeпоръчвам този продукт и не мисля, че струва $20.
